Wilson Joins Plymouth
Thursday, 20th May 2021 15:12

Released Blues central defender James Wilson has agreed to join fellow League One side Plymouth Argyle once his Town contract expires at the end of June.

Once-called Wales international Wilson, the Blues’ Player of the Year in 2020/21, was released by Town after two years at the end of the season.

Wilson, 32, made 47 starts and two sub appearances for Town, scoring twice, having joined on a free transfer following a trial in the summer of 2019 having left Lincoln.

I think he'll do well for them. Pretty solid for us whenever he played. Good luck, James!

He came in and did a good job. Shame we can't say that about most of the recent signings.

Glad he's sorted himself out a good deal nice and quickly. Did well for us over the last couple of seasons and deserves to remain at league 1 level. Plymouth should be an ideal fit for him.

Would not have been disappointed to see him stay as there has been little wrong with our defensive performances over the last few seasons; and he contributed to that - a good solid player.

Best of luck James, I wonder how many clubs have let their supporters player of the season go?

I also think he would have been worth keeping for another season he always put in a solid shift, but good luck to him for the future and on finding a new club so quickly.

Glad he's found another club in League One. I'd say he was arguably Lambert's most unexpectedly best signing at the club. A solid pro who can walk away from here with a bit of praise unlike the majority of the rest. Good luck to him.

Good for him. As our POTY I was expecting his contract to be extended for another year at least. I'm sure it will go well for him.

Good man. Solid performer at this level. Surprised to see him ditched. Will always be affectionately remembered amongst the Block P faithful as Wilson-OUT.

Consistent performer but probably considered to not be good enough to get us back to the Championship

I was surprised that we let him go; I would have thought that he was worth another season with us.

Yep, the best of a bad bunch with deceptive pace. Would've been happy to keep him

Good luck to James, glad he's found another club. However given the fact that some players might be playing for league 1 clubs next season it might come back to bite Town in the butt.

Lambo used to say he would shoulder the responsibility of his younger team members in order to allow them to go and play and express themselves freely without their fear of criticism or reaction

I am a great advocate of our youth system and have waxed lyrical many a time about our youngsters. However, our style of play throughout the club has lacked a sharpness and energy until recently when we have seen a hunger from the u18's. Unfortunately teams don't win anything with kids, so we cannot keep extending their contracts if at 19 or 20 that they don't seriously look like the can force their way onto the bench or earn themselves a loan in L2 or National League.

What impresses me about Cook is he acts like a winner, will take no excuses and expects everyone of his players on the pitch to take their fair share of responsibility to make things happen and win games.

Onto the point in question, Willo was a decent player at this level and there seemed no good reason not to renew his contract even if he only remained a squad member.

Cooks aspiration is Championship the season after next so I can understand not wanting to offer a two year contract to a player he thinks might struggle to make the step up, especially if he is thinking of rebuilding the spine of the team and from the back to give us a good foundation for a couple of years or so.

Cook will take the League and FA Cup seriously (maybe not the Pizza Cup) and put a strong side out, he understands the passion of a cup run and what that means for supporters.

I am convinced we will have a very good team come August capable of challenging a top two position.

Back to Willo, look forward to giving him a good reception when he returns to Portman Road next season with Plymouth. A good club and like others have said it probably is a very good fit for him. All the best James and thanks for being our most consistent player over the last two years even though you had very little competition.

Surprised he didn't go to a better club than Plymouth. A good solid defender who we should've kept hold of.

A better centre back than toto so was surprised he was allowed to leave although it seems Cook thinks everyone in the squad isn't good enough or deserve more than a 45 second “get lost”. I can't see where we get the wage budget from to sign better than we have unless they are under 21 and don't count towards it.
