Hull City have to make Chelsea loanee’s move permanent this summer

Chelsea defender Todd Kane has turned out to be a shrewd loan acquisition for Championship side Hull City this season.

The 25-year-old has slotted in nicely into the Tigers’ starting XI under Nigel Adkins and has played 30 games in all competitions since his switch from Stamford Bridge.

Contract up at Chelsea at the end of the season

Kane’s Chelsea deal expires in the summer meaning he is free to leave them on a free transfer, assuming the Premier League side don’t offer him a new one. Snapping him up on a permanent basis seems a no brainer for Hull.

Needs to settle down

The Cambridgeshire-born defender has been on the books at Chelsea since Under-8 level. However, he has never made a senior appearance for them. Instead, he has had loan spells out at Preston North End, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, NEJ Nijmegen, FC Groningen, Oxford United and now Hull.

It’s very unlikely he’ll be able to break into Chelsea’s first-team so a move to Hull, where he will play week in week out, seems the next logical move for his career.

Long-term option

Kane is still only 25 and will be a good long-term option for the Tigers. He also has healthy competition with Eric Lichaj for the right-back spot which comes in handy for Adkins. Kane is also versatile and has also played in midfield this season which is useful.
